After reports of Pakistani shelling affecting civilians in Jammu and Kashmir, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sent a five-member Trinamool Congress (TMC) delegation to assess the ground situation. The visit was aimed at understanding the condition of people in conflict-affected regions such as Poonch and Rajouri, where cross-border firing has led to deaths and property damage.
The delegation, led by TMC’s Rajya Sabha leader Derek O’Brien, included MPs Nadimul Haque, Mamatabala Thakur, Sagarika Ghose, and West Bengal Irrigation Minister Manas Bhunia. The team conducted a three-day field visit, interacting with residents, victims’ families, and people engaged in tourism and other local professions. According to officials, 17 civilians have died in shelling, and several homes have been damaged.
During the visit, the team also held a detailed meeting with former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to discuss the region’s current political and humanitarian situation. The delegation visited the Rajouri Government Medical College where injured victims are being treated. They met doctors and expressed appreciation for their service to the injured.
The Chief Minister posted a message acknowledging the efforts of the team. “I am deeply grateful to our five-member delegation... They visited areas affected by cross-border firing, met grieving families, and extended sympathy and support. They also visited the Rajouri medical facility and thanked the doctors for their dedicated service,” she wrote.
The full report based on the visit will be submitted to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday. Sources have indicated that the Chief Minister may forward this report to the central government. TMC is currently the only political party that has sent a team to Kashmir for an on-ground assessment following the civilian casualties.
